February 12th, 2018: Why is it good to give?

Giving is an essential part of being a Christian. In the Bible, God tells us “do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased” (Hebrews 13:16). Not only are we commanded by God to give and help our neighbors, studies have shown that the happiest and most fulfilled people are the ones that donate their time to others. A life spent only on oneself will undoubtedly lead to a life filled with unhappiness and loneliness. An individual does not need to give a thousand dollar check, but can give a small amount every month. This donation does not always need to be monetary. Instead, giving time to others is an act of generosity that can make an immaculate difference in someone’s life. The Lord Jesus reminds us that our giving is ultimately to the all-seeing heavenly Father. Jesus said "When you give . . . ; your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you" (Matthew 6:3-4). We are able to improve our own lives, and the lives of everyone around us, when we give to our brothers and sisters. By giving to others, we are making the world a better place.
